Day 5 - FIRE!

Okay, yes and no here, but you can't blame a gal for trying to be dramatic in this clickbait culture. Anyways, first thing this morning while still heading into port, the fire alarm goes off. We haven't had drills yet so everyone is unsure if this is real or what to do. But being good sailors we head to our muster stations to wait for more information. While we were outside we got to see a rainbow, so I think it was a rainbow alarm instead of a fire alarm.

It turned out that the fume hood in the galley was having issues and set off the smoke alarm, so no big deal. It was a spooky start to the day though. Most people went back inside after that, but I stayed out and chatted with a coworker, Caitlin, who I sailed with last time, and lucky we did because we were shortly joined by a humpback whale! It was splashing around, which Caitlin said they do for communication.

We did some more work to start organizing the lab and getting ready. There's a lot more to do, but we're in port for a few more days so we have lots of time. Nothing very interesting is happening yet on the science side so I won't bore you with that, but don't worry I'll let you know when anything cool happens.

We had a nice dinner at a beach bar, and it was nice to start getting to know more of my coworkers. We work and live in such close quarters, it's good to be friendly. But here's another sunset picture from dinner. You'll be getting a lot of these, so get used to it.
